About Nathdwara

Nathdwara, meaning the gate of god is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrims of India. Nestled on the banks of Benas River, the city is renowned for its 17th century old temple dedicated to lord Krishna. It is believed that lord Krishna himself selected the palace where now the shrine stands. According to a legend, the statue of lord Krishna was brought from Vrindavan to save it from the rage of Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb. The cart carrying the image is said to have been stuck here. The priest traveling with the statue realized that Lord Krishna had chosen the spot for his shrine. Accordingly, a temple was built that came to be known as Shrinathji temple. During Janmashthami, the devotees throng from various parts of the country to get a glimpse of the captivating statue of Krishna. Nathwara is also famous for its unique Pichhwai paintings that portray Lord Shrinathji beautifully with extensive usage of gold color.
